Michigan Security Alarm Systems Act Registration

Effective as of January 2, 2013, all Michigan security alarm system companies engaging in the business of selling, leasing, renting, maintaining, repairing, installing, or otherwise providing security alarm systems to the public at a protected premises or by remote monitoring are required to annually register with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (“LARA”). Failure to comply with the new registration requirements is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.

But here’s the catch…while the new Michigan Security Alarm Systems Act generally describes what must be included in the registration affidavit and authorizes the State of Michigan to impose a registration fee, LARA officials have stated they will not be creating a standard registration form and will be imposing the registration fee on a case by case basis based on how long it takes to review the affidavit.

(Note: This new registration requirement is in addition to the previous security alarm contractor licensing requirements under Michigan’s Private Security Business and Security Alarm Act of 1968.)

If your company is required to register under Michigan’s new Security Alarm Systems Act and you want to ensure your registration is quickly reviewed and approved by LARA, I would be happy to work with you in submitting the registration affidavit for a flat fee of $400.
